How do I modify the term artist_cat in the url of the category? Instead of mysite.com/artist_cat/rock build mysite.com/genreartist/rock?

You can’t modify that in categories.

You can customise it but it will be like this. https://wordpress.org/support/topic/show-category-in-custom-post-type-permalink

We have post types located in musicplay/musicband/artists/artist.php file where you can modify the code. But make sure you replicate the file in your child theme. Its safe for you to get updates in the future without any hassle.
