Is this feature built into the theme? If not, can you please add, as this is very common in premium themes.

Especially if we are linking to an outside site, it doesn’t make sense to open in the same window.

How can I make links placed in the slider open in a new tab/window?

If you can provide us WP Logins to your website with URL then we can take a closer look at it. Make sure you set the post as private reply so that only admin can see your wp-logins.
