I am not sure how to get the ‘teaser text widget’ to work on my site. i have looked around almost everywhere and get get it to work.

i want a graphic like on your sample site – not a blog posting.

Make sure you select the homepage from theme options panel not from WP-settings>reading>frontpage… After that you can enable the frontpage teaser widget and everything working fine.
