How do I update the theme without resetting my website? It’s live so I can’t afford to have it go back to square one. I’ve only ever used themes that have an inbuilt “update” feature so I’m confused. Thank you.

If you are using child theme then it will be very easy for you to update the theme. You can just update the parent theme easily without worrying.
In-case if you are not using the child theme then it will be difficult to update the parent theme because if you have modified any files in parent, then the changes what you have made will be lost.
But please take a backup of your files while updating.
